How to Use Mullein Oil for Lungs Effectively – Natural Remedy
The Lungs
The lungs are the most essential organs within the human respiratory system. Their function is to inhale oxygen from the atmosphere and pass it on into the bloodstream. In exchange, the body releases carbon dioxide (CO2) gas from the bloodstream into the atmosphere as a byproduct of the entire process.
This whole process is what is called the act of breathing. The lungs are located in the chest area of the body, specifically in the chest’s thoracic cavity. There are two lungs in the body, one on the left and one on the right side. The lungs anatomy consists of the trachea, tubular branches of trachea/the bronchi, smaller branches of bronchi/the bronchioles and a much smaller branch of bronchioles/the alveoli, which taken the form of a microscopic air pocket.
The lungs work as follows: air is first inhaled from the nose/mouth and then passed on along the trachea towards the bronchi. Once the air reached the bronchi, it will then pass the air on into the much smaller bronchioles.
From here, the air is then delivered and stored within the microscopic air sac of the bronchioles, i.e. the alveoli. Between the alveoli, there is a thin layer of cells that contains blood vessels that support the alveoli, this layer is called the interstitium. Oxygen from inhaled air within the alveoli will be passed on towards the bloodstream inside the capillaries.
Once in, the blood will leave the lungs, circulate towards the heart and the heart will use the oxygen to fuel organs activities. As a waste byproduct, the carbon dioxide (CO2) gas will be recirculated back from the heart to the lungs, where it is exhaled out of the body by the reverse inhalation process. Both lungs are also sheathed by a thin layer called the pleura. This layer enabled the lungs to expand or contract with minimum friction when we are breathing.

Lung problems
It is known that the air that we breathe is not free of dangerous substances and pathogens. To protect from these, the lungs have their own internal defensive system. Among these are microscopic hairs (cilia) inside the breathing channel, whose function is to dispose large-size particles that are too big to be inhaled with air.
Then there is also the mucus, a type of liquid produced by the trachea, whose function is to keep the air channel moist and help prevent pathogens and other substances from entering the inner part of the lungs. Among the diseases/damages that can be caused by disturbances present in the lungs are as follows:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): a disease caused by the obstruction within the breathing channel and in the lungs due to the presence of contaminants or due to smoking. Symptoms of COPD are: persistent cough, shortness of breath and difficulty of blowing air out.
- Emphysema: a type of COPD where the alveoli is damaged due to smoking. The symptom of this disease is usually shortness of breath.
- Chronic bronchitis: a disease caused by infection in the bronchi. The symptom of this disease is repeated cough and difficulty of breathing.
One of the cheapest & traditional ways to treat lung problems are by regularly taking medicinal herbs. One of the most well known of these is the mullein or velvet plant from the Genus Verbascum.

Mullein plant
The mullein, or the velvet plant (Genus: Verbascum) is a plant that is often found endemically in Europe and Asia. The plant flower and leaves are well-known for its medicinal qualities. We usually prepare the plants in the form of mullein oil, and this can be taken either orally or as a form of skin ointment.
To prepare mullein oil, we start by drying the leaves/flowers in a closed container during the day. Once it is dry, we then infused or mixed the dried leaves/flowers with olive oil as a base oil for the end product. We then leave the infused oil inside the container for about one day and afterwards discard any remaining plant material such as flowers or leaves.
This oil has among others, an expectorant and an antioxidant property. The oil’s expectorant abilities will aid the body in clearing the breathing channel of foreign contaminants.
While its antioxidant property will help the body to combat dangerous infections within the respiratory system. Hence by taking the oil regularly, we can significantly help the body in reducing lungs problems without resorting to serious medical procedures.
